Civil Partnerships
|
Since the 5th December 2005 same sex couples may register their Partnership and are then afforded virtually the same status as a married couple.
We can advise upon the rights that are acquired upon entering into a Civil Partnership and your options and entitlements should that relationship breakdown.
Considerations of children, finance and the long term future are the same as for heterosexual couples and our expertise can help.

As so many people have a total misconception about the rights that cohabiting couples have against each other there have been many instances of appalling vulnerability and unfairness. Just because you live with someone, no matter for how long or with what financial commitments, you do not necessarily have appropriate protection for either your current or future financial position yet.
There are some ways to protect yourself now and to regularise contributions between couples and the Law is under review. At the moment, however, there is no such thing as a “common law husband” or “wife” and you need to take legal advice and enter into proper arrangements before your money follows your heart.
We can assist you in drawing up an agreement that reflects your intentions and we can offer advice in the event of the relationship breaking down. Once the law has been reviewed some new obligations may be placed upon you and you need to be aware of these now
